The screen looks just fine. I did need to get into the settings and select the screen shift display for the Rav in the display settings. (It was shifted to the left.)
I’m excited to have wireless CarPlay and hoping I figure out all the quirks.
Installation was straight forward if not a bit tricky mainly due to lack of room behind the headunit to cram all the wires. Unit feels of good quality and the wires are wrapped in felt tape as to not rattle.
What it's like using this:
- The video quality is low like many have mentioned but that's due to low inherent resolution of the head unit, otherwise it's decently usable if not a bit cramped. I believe it's a VGA (640x480) screen.
- The touch screen interface works as expected and there is no problem with it being quick and responsive.
- It's activated by selecting Aux on the head unit - at that point none of the built in buttons on the headunit will work outside of power and volume - which is somewhat expected. However there are some notable gotchas.
- You cannot listen to the factory radio, USB, XM or anything like that while using this. Remember this is your Aux input.
- If you like to fiddle with your bass or treble controls, it's hard. There's a 1 second delay switching into and out of this unit where you see the factory AUX screen and that is the only chance you'll get to make adjustments.
- To exit out of this and get back to the built-in radio, you have to somewhat unintuitively hit the power button or use the steering wheel controls to select a different source.
- The sound quality for streaming media sounds a bit flat. A bit like the dynamic range is compressed.
- There is a USB dongle for your mp3's on USB. It starts playing when you plug in a USB. You have to leave android auto and back into the autoABC interface to do anything with the playback which is annoying.
As a device that is outside of the factory unit splicing into the factory screen, touch interface and audio somebody did a great job for the price. It's well short of a fully factory effort, but if you want android auto in your car without replacing your head unit this is probably as good as it can get.
Pro's:
- Wireless CarPlay works reliably
- Apple Maps scrolls smoothly
- Calls and music play as expected
- CarPlay auto-connects wirelessly when you get in the car if it was previously connected
- Interface is pretty responsive considering it's a reverse -engineered product
- The steering wheel buttons and center instrument display work as usual
Cons:
- Screen quality is limited by the camera input's resolution. It's good enough for me, but definitely not as sharp as the factory software. There are some adjustments needed to optimize quality of audio and video.
- If you start the truck and put it in reverse before CARabc has booted up, you'll get black screen for camera. I start the car, find my driving glasses and put them on, put on my seatbelt, and then it's booted up and the backup cam works.
Adjustments that worked for me:
1. Don't touch the EQ or video settings in the CARabc menu.
2. In the Toyota Entune's settings, set the backup camera contrast all the way to the right
3. In Entune, set the Aux input's sound settings to something like treble=center, mid=2 clicks from all of the way left, bass=center or maybe +1 click from center.
4. In the CARabc settings, you can set the level balance between the navigation, calls, apps, and music. I have the music at 13 and the "phone audio" at 18. Navigation at 15. If you have trouble seeing this menu, try turning off wifi on your phone. A prompt will appear saying that CarPlay will be disconnected - that's what you want. It will reconnect automatically in in about 20 seconds, so that's how long you have to mess with the CARabc settings.
Tips: Pressing the voice button on the steering wheel toggles between Entune and CarPlay. The power button does this also, but slightly differently.
Install is easy. Plug and play.
This unit will give you CarPlay in your stock radio. That’s what I was looking for. However there are some quirks.
1. The main critique I’ve seen is that the screen resolution is low. It’s not amazingly sharp (see photo) but really it’s not a deal breaker for me. I can see WAZE, Google maps, Pandora etc. just fine for my needs.
2. Once in CarPlay you cannot play your normal radio so that’s a bummer. Just Spotify or Pandora or if you have a radio app. In order to listen to the radio you’d need to return to the stock Entune and you’d lose whatever CarPlay feature you were using.
3. EDIT: I re-paired and now this recognizes my phone everytime I get in the car and auto pairs for wireless CarPlay. I can still plug it in to charge my phone. Works very smooth.
4. This box supports a front camera input. Pressing the Home icon takes you to the CarPlay menu where you can select the front camera. This is a huge plus that wasn’t advertised.
5. The steering controls work but don’t show the volume in CarPlay - but it works. You can skip songs from the steering controls as well.
Overall for the price point I think I’ll keep it to cruise to pandora, navigate on Waze and use iheartradio for other tunes or I can just exit the module and use the stock system. It gives you options. Haven’t tried to make a phone call yet but Siri works. 4/5 for quirky items noted.
Very easy install, essentially plug and play on my 2019 4Runner. Using it primarily for Apple CarPlay and I immediately prefer it over the OEM Toyota Entune radio system.
The only small downfalls are: screen resolution isn’t the greatest but not a killer for me, and I can’t seem to figure out how to get the AirPlay feature to work as it was advertised to do (to broadcast video to the unit I assume?). Lastly, it may not have the snappiest system respond to touch at times.
Overall I’m deciding to keep it because of all the benefits of CarPlay over the stock radio system and all it’s issues.
Passthrough harnesses make installation a breeze.
Apple CarPlay seems to work great but I haven't tried Android Auto yet.
Great way to add Apple CarPlay or Android auto to your factory system to retain the factory look.
Existing touchscreen works well with swiping etc...
Definitely a must buy if you're are still using your older factory system.
Fast touch response. As described. Plug and play.
Cons: - cant see volume level - some time its not connected automatically i have to restart it 2 or 3 times. Will try to reach the tech support to ask.
Overall its amazing upgrade and highly recommend but will keep my eye on it to see what will happened next.
Easy to install. Boots fast. No conflict with backup camera.
Resolution is acceptable after some color settings.
Nothing to blame about the resolution and sound because they are still the car's oem parts.
Not bad for $200 instead of blowing money on trying to transplant an Entune 3.0 headunit, harness and JBL amp for over $1k or close to $1k on aftermarket.
Everything is good, just a little bit of echo while talking on the phone using car play, that’s the only complaint I have.

The adapter I received came with a wifi antenna which differed in design compared to what’s depicted in the product listing on Amazon and the included installation manual. I suppose this was done for two reasons: 1) make it easier to fit the adapter behind and below the OEM head unit, and 2) improve the wifi connection between the adapter and your phone.
Overall, the plug and play installation of the CARabc adapter was a quick breeze. The only essential tool you need is a 10mm socket wrench. The wiring harnesses clipped in firmly and seems to be well built. I routed the USB cable to the glove box and the wifi antenna above the glove box.
Initially the CARabc adapter booted to a blue screen. Turning the car off, then back on resolved the issue and it hasn’t happened again. The adapter is very responsive and functions as advertised and expected. The slow Entune system can be ignored and you have a modern infotainment system in your Corolla via your phone and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto.
Notes:
1. If you put your car into reverse immediately after starting your car, the backup camera video won’t display on the head unit. Instead, you’ll see a black screen. I gather the CARabc adapter needs a few seconds to fully boot before it passes the reverse camera’s signal through. Not necessarily a big deal but rather a minor change in behavior you need to get used to.
2. My adapter shipped with CUST version hwb-2023.02.06-v1.9 and MCU version vcab112.
